Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Mohd Amin Nordin Abdul Aziz launch Pemadam's strategic plan to eradicate drugs in the city today.

The mayor today launched Malaysian Drug Prevention Association's (Pemadam) five-year strategic plan to overcome drug abuse in Kuala Lumpur.
A part of the plan is focused on increasing the quality and efficiency of Pemadam’s services.
Mayor Datuk Mohd Amin Nordin Abdul Aziz said special attention would be given to “black” areas, primarily in public low-cost housing schemes.
“Pemadam needs to provide these areas with holistic programmes so we can overcome the problem," he said.
Amin said programmes such as Pemadam’s Kuala Lumpur Football League 2015, which was also launched today, were important in community building and the fight against drugs.
"Together with Pemadam, we will carry on the effort to make Kuala Lumpur a drug-free city by 2020.”
He said heroin, marijuana and syabu were the predominant drugs confiscated in the first four months of the year.
Amin said although the number of people caught using drugs was not high, City Hall and Pemadam needed to continue to advance in the fight against drugs.
“In 39 years, Pemadam has been successful in spreading awareness of the negative impacts of drug abuse.
“Last year, the police narcotics department caught 174,427 drug offenders,” he said.
However, Amin said, for every drug user caught, there were four more out there, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
"I was informed by the Bukit Aman Narcotics Investigation Department last year, 19,425 were caught for drug-related crimes in a city of 1,814,700 people. This means that only 1.2% of Kuala Lumpur residents are involved in drug-related crimes," he said.
